Kismet, a hidden gem in the heart of Nelson, is a destination for whisky enthusiasts, cocktail lovers, and guests wanting something different to a typical bar. Named after the Persian word for "fate," and the interaction between Admiral Lord Nelson and Captain Hardy at the Battle of Trafalgar - historians are still arguing if Nelson’s last words “kiss me, Hardy” or “kismet, Hardy” - Kismet the bar is a special place.

From the outside, Kismet is unassuming but step inside, and you'll discover a treasure trove of spirits and a warm, inviting atmosphere. The back bar, a whisky lover's dream, boasts over 300 labels, each with its own story. "We want people to feel comfortable," says Kymberly, co-owner of Kismet. "Visitors can ask for a whisky any way they choose. It's about the Whisky, the stories, and provenance.”

Whether you're a seasoned whisky connoisseur or a just after something a bit different, Kismet can deliver on it all. As Kymberly puts it, "There are centuries of incredible history behind every bottle."

One of Kismet's coolest features is the secret Macallan Room, hidden behind a bookshelf. This intimate space, seating just ten people, has a dedicated bartender and offers a quirky and fun experience. Regular customers are often blown away by this hidden gem, and it has become a popular spot for special occasions and private gatherings.

Kismet is renowned for its innovative cocktails, crafted with meticulous attention to detail. "We love the classics, but we also like to keep things fresh," Kymberly explains. "Everything is made from scratch, from syrups to infusions."

As an official Ardbeg Embassy, Kismet offers a unique experience for Ardbeg enthusiasts. "We're the only Ardbeg Embassy in New Zealand," Kymberly says. "We've hosted Ardbeg Day, turned the whole bar into a circus tent as part of the Dark Circus theme, complete with sword swallowers and face painters. It was an absolute highlight!"

Kismet isn't just a place to enjoy a drink, it's a place to connect. The bar's warm and welcoming atmosphere creates a sense of community.

Kymberly shares, "It's humbling when people choose to have their special events with us—weddings, celebrations, and more. We're working hard to make Kismet Nelson's go-to cocktail and whisky bar. We want to take the pretence out of it and make everyone feel welcome."
