Probationary Periods

Probationary Periods

Amendments to the Employment Relations Act 2000 (Act) that took effect on 6 May 2019 mean that large employers (with 20 or more employees) are prohibited from using 90-day trial periods.  However, all employers (both large and small) may use probationary periods.  As such, probationary periods are an alternate way for employers to test (for an appropriate time) the suitability of employees in the workplace.
